Getting your pool filters ready for summer

We’ve already gone through how to get your pool chemicals ready for summer and now it’s time for the other half of your pool’s sanitasion system, the filters! Getting your filters ready for summer is just as important as your pool chemical levels as your filter is the one in charge of taking out all of visible particles in your pool to leave you with crystal clear pool water all summer long.

Getting your pool cartridge filter ready for summer

The first thing you should do is to inspect your cartridge filter for damage before the summer season starts. There’s nothing more heartbreaking than discovering that your cartridge filter has a crack in the middle of the season and having to cut short swimming days because you don’t have a working cartridge filter.

Inspection is pretty straightforward, just open up your cartridge filter, take out the filter cartridge and visually inspect every inch for any signs of cracking or damage. If you do find any, take it to a service center so it can be fixed (this takes a long time to do) or replace it before the season starts..

Getting your Filter Cartridge Ready for Summer

There’s really no special trick to getting your pool cartridge filter ready for the summer. Just give it a good hose down and soak it overnight in some specially formulated Zodiac Filter Cleaner to melt away all of the gunk and junk that have accumulated during the off season.

The reason for this is simple, since you haven’t been using the pool much during the off season, this would mean that you would have skipped cleaning your filters as well. This gives the trapped particles more time to embed themselves into the fibers of your filter cartridge. Don’t worry though, the Water TechniX Filter Cleaning Solution (coming soon!) can melt these right off without harming your filters, leaving you with a filter that’s just like new and ready for the summer season!

If soaking in filter cleaning solution didn’t work or if there’s any physical damage on your filter cartridge, then you will have to replace it before the summer season starts. Mr Pool Man carries a wide range of filter cartridge replacements that are made with REEMAY filter elements that are a fraction of the cost of branded filter cartridges but they work as well (and in many cases even better!) as their more expensive counterparts.

Getting your sand filters ready for summer

Sand filters are the easiest things to get ready for summer. Just give them a good backwash and you’re good to go! This is one of the reasons why people love sand filters, they’re so easy to clean and prepare for summer.

One tip that we would like to share though is that before the summer seasons starts and if you’re using a sand filter is to give your pool a good flocculant treatment. We don’t recommend “floccing” your pool if you have a cartridge filter, but with sand filters, it’s one of the best ways to ensure that your water will be crystal clear the entire summer! Simply apply the flocculant according to the instructions printed on the bottle, allow it to rest overnight to attract all of the microscopic particles that slip through your sand filter, vacuum it out and then backwash your sand filter!

Conclusion

That’s it! That’s all there is to getting your pool filters ready for summer. Making sure that there's no visible damage and giving them a thorough cleaning before the season starts can go a long way in ensuring that your summer is filled with crystal clear water instead of cloudy and murky pool water.
