Nothing beats pool sand filters when it comes to ease of maintenance, longevity, and reliability when it comes to swimming pool water filtration. Shop the best pool sand filters from Australia’s leading brands like Water TechniX, Monarch, Davey, Onga, and more!
While pool sand filters are more expensive up front when compared to cartridge filters, they’re a very popular choice in Australian households due to their longevity and performance. On top of that, cleaning a pool sand filter only takes a couple of minutes with the backwash function.
Sand Filter Size
Depending on the size of your pool, sand filters can be anywhere from 25 inches in diameter all the way up to 32 inches. Due to the large capacity of sand filters, they are less prone to blockages and they only require filter media replacement every five to ten years.

Sand Filter Media
Pool sand filters commonly use either pool sand or glass filter media and the quality of filtration will also depend on the type of media used, with glass filter media providing superior filtration over regular sand filter media.

Pool Sand Filter Troubleshooting
As we have mentioned earlier, pool sand filters are very robust and durable. If any problems arise, then the most common culprit would be the multiport. The multiport is where all of the water passes through before being filtered by the tank so some wear and tear is expected there.
Pool Sand Filter Sizing by pool capacity
70,000 liters and below - 21" to 24" Diameter Sand Filter
70,000 liters to 110,000 liters - 25" to 30" Diameter Sand Filter
110,000 liters to 180,000 liters - 30" to 36" Diameter Sand Filter
Just like pool cartridge filters, it's always good to size up your sand filter to prevent issues like channeling, improper filtering, and to reduce the pressure on your pool pump.
