Salt water cells turn the salt in pool water into usable chlorine through a process called "electrolysis", usually needing to be replaced around every 5 years. Shop both generic and genuine salt cells from all major salt water chlorinator brands in Australia like Zodiac, Water TechniX, Astral and more!
Your salt water chlorinator operates by passing electricity through your salt water cell, which turns the salt in the water into natural chlorine before sending it back out into the pool through your return lines. Salt water cells have an average lifespan of around five years or even more.
Basic Salt Cell Troubleshooting
If your pool water is getting cloudy or if chlorine levels are lower than they should be, here are some basic troubleshooting tips before you think about changing out your salt cell.
- Check the power - Since salt cells are out of sight, a malfunction could be caused by a simple blown fuse or loose cable. Check to see if the unit turns on and is functioning correctly.
- Check the water flow - A salt water chlorinator needs a certain level of flow to function correctly. Clean your filter and ensure that there are no clogs in your intake lines.
- Check salt levels - Most salt cells require anywhere from 2500-3500 ppm of salt to function correctly.
- Check water balance - Ensure that your pH levels are where they should be. If your pH level is too low then the chlorine produced by your salt cells will be burned off faster by the sun, if pH is too high then the chlorine generated will be less effective.
- Inspect and Clean your salt water cells - Your salt water cells need cleaning every few months for them to function properly. Check out Mr Pool Man’s salt water cell cleaning guide for more information.
