Spa no longer providing those relaxing jets of water or failing to start completely? Tried all of the troubleshooting tips but to no avail? It might be time to replace your spa pump! Mr Pool Man stocks the best range of spa pumps from trusted Australian brands like Aqua-Flo and more!
A spa pump isn’t just your ordinary pump. Although they may seem the same as pool pumps, spa pumps are specially designed to move the water in your spa and power the spa jets. It is worth noting though that spas will usually have two pumps installed. A circulation pump to move and filter the spa water (typically has a lower horsepower rating) and a booster pump whose job is to power those power-hungry spa jets!
It is worth noting that it is very important to get a spa pump that’s sized right for your spa. You can’t just get the biggest available size and expect it to spit out powerful (and relaxing!) jets of water! The internal plumbing must be appropriate as a too-strong pump will be limited by the pipes and can even cause leaks or even damage to your spa!
Things to look out for before purchasing a spa pump:
- Voltage - Always check the voltage rating before buying your pump, some imports use a different voltage than what is being used in Australia (although you won’t find this problem with pumps being sold here at Mr Pool Man)
- Horsepower - Check your existing pump and make sure that you don’t go UNDER or OVER what you currently have installed. The rule of thumb will state that you don’t go over 1HP from what you currently have.
- Speed - Determining how many Gallons Per Minute (GPM) you’ll need for your spa jets by taking the number of spa jets that you have and multiplying that number with the flow rating. To find out the flow rating, refer to your spa owner’s manual or contact your spa manufacturer.
- Plumbing Size - While not really a make or break item, it’s still helpful to find out what your current PVC pipe sizes are to see if you’ll need any extra plumbing work to be done or if it’s just going to be plug-and-play for your pumps.
Single Speed or Dual Speed Spa Pumps?
That depends on the model of your spa and the jets installed. If the jets can be adjusted to restrict or increase the flow then a single speed pump may be enough. But if you’re looking for that additional “oomph” or if you want an option to lower your power consumption when you just want to simmer in your spa without the jets, then a dual speed spa pump can be a good option.
